Nowadays we just celebrated our second Eid where a Muslim is expected during it to give meat to any person in need, even non-Muslim. The first Eid, before 3 months, the Muslim person should give specific quantity of food (any popular cereal in the town) to people who are in need. You can add to your reading the continuous persuading of giving hand to people and helping people, even emotional help is encouraged explicitly by Islam, as smiling and reassuring behavior.
_ Islam is not necessary what you see in some Muslim. This is not the way to know a religion. Islam is not a religion that appears in birth, marriage and death only, Islam is a way of life, from awake till sleep, from birth till death.
_ Since you mentioned reading, believe me, I read enough as a truth seeker, not a suspicion seeker; and same suggestion goes to you, Be careful and neutral when you read about Islam, or any other subject you want to know it thoroughly.

I do believe, however, that it is surprising how brutal the Israelis have been towards the Palestinians given their history under Hitler. One would think that it would make them more understanding, compassionate and humble. But there is a saying (perhapse it was coined by Thomas Sowel of Princetown), that the greatest oppressors are those who were once oppressed. There is lots of history and datapoints on this. Just look at the American Irish in Boston and Chicago, for example. Here's a people who were highly oppressed by the British AND when they first came to this country only to turn around and be the enforcers of oppression on the "newest" immigrants of their day. So, I'm not sure if this characteristic is unique to the Israelis or just a defective trait of the human condition.

That being said, it is absolutely WRONG to paint ALL Isrealis with one broad brush. There is GREAT diversity (political, religious) within Israel. I believe they are undergoing a great national (internal) debate as to what their role in the world will/should be as well as extreme pressure and scrutiny from the other nations of the world.

I, for one, hope that the Isrealis will stop dehumanizing the Palestians and provide some moral, political and social leadership for all the world to see and emmulate. That would be an affirming trait of the "believers" and would make the One God we ALL (claim to) worship well pleased.
