update latest news Fire map of affected areas to 2009FEB21 This is the CFA thematic map of the Kilmore East - Murrindindi Map (Maroondah - O'Shannassy Area) (pdf 55kb) showing the extent of the fire as of 2009FEB21 or +day14 ( 2 weeks after the fire). I got it from the CFA Incident report page which I listen to via twitter and twitter user cfa_updates. It's for media purposes but gives you a good idea of the dimensions of the fire. The scale is 32mm is equivalent to 5000m. Observations The map is a DSE (Department of Sustainability & Environment) thematic map showing an overlay of main roads (dark red), green (public land), blue area (permanent water), blue lines (creeks), hashed areas (area burnt/burning by fire). The hashed areas (areas of fire damage) indicates why some areas took so long to clear and why it is closed off. It also shows why it's taking so long to get resources into the area - all the main roads are effected. If we get some more hot windy days this summer the fire could spring up again and keep going. The small fire-like icons represent hot-spots as seen by satellite fly-overs which means what you are looking at now is not what is on the ground at the moment. This is a snapshot of the situation at one point in time. Past mapping Check the scale of the fire when mapped in 2009FEB08 to this map. My flickr coverage I've added the areas I've got flickr coverage onto the map - Eltham - Diamond Creek - Yarrambat - Doreen - Kinglake West - Kinglake Area - Strathewen Area next Commentsbootload

The small fire like icons are the fire locations when first reported (See DSE website) MODIS rapidfire hotspots are shown as small squares, thematically shaded for time. Accuracy of fire edge varies depending on how it was mapped. Most of the edge is now derived from airborne infrared line scan.
