What has a toolbox, a broken lawnmower & software got to do with each other?

    Out come the tools ...

nicely done, the colors contrast really captured my eye

To tell you the truth I didn't think about the colour on the shot when I took it. These are a set of pretty good sidchrome open face spanners. I think the point I was trying to make was even with the best tools I'm still a lawnmower user rather than someone who can fix/modify.

      But now you mention it.

I used this image in a blog post. Not only is the image fitting, your commentary is as well.

Hey Kaeru the shot is of a genuine drop forged, metric Sidchrome socket set I got for my 21'st. Absolute god send for fixing things. Lawn mowers, tightening bolts, undoing spark plugs even taps. I eventually got rid of this mower. Cracked the head and the cylinders filled with fuel. It's ready to be stripped of wheels, axles before I get rid of it.

Read your accompaning post. This is a useful insight and is a guiding principal proposed by Eric Von Hippel [0] an open innovation Prof. at MIT.

I was checking out your flickr site. Do you much storyboarding? I'm thinking at the moment of writing a cartoon display system (open source). [0] Would it be applicable to storyboarding?

[0] Some of his books on the topic are downloadable as PDF here ~ web.mit.edu/evhippel/www/books.htm

[1] The idea is to simplify the way cartoonists publish their cartoons. ie: xkcd.com/. Yo u have made me realise there could be an application for storyboarding.

Hey Bootload thanks for pointing out Mr. Von Hippel's work. I'll be sure to check it out. I do quite a bit of storyboarding indeed. Sometimes I do storyboards that are more likeconceptual comics. The difference is subtle. In my storyboards, I tend to support a lot of the imagery with text outside of the frames. That would be something a display system needs to support to make it useful for (my) storyboards. I've taken a look at the Tarquin Engine in the past but haven't actually worked with it yet. Perhaps it's of interest to you?

Great thread! I am not a software developer, but I do think that visual language, including storyboarding but also including other kinds of visual mapping, can be useful in all kinds of contexts.

Glad you like it. :-) I'm not software developer either. I am a visual thinker, which probably explains why I'm so drawn to these techniques.
