Just got my SB-24 speedlight so thought I'd test it out on a trip to Weymouth.
It works very well with the D700 and has a choice of 5 power settings in 1EV steps - 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 & 1/16
I was mainly using the mid point setting of 1/4 which seemed to offer a good mix of fill flash & ambient.

Just got a Nikkor 28mm f/3.5 AI lens to replace my existing 28mm f/2.8 D lens. My "D" lens cost me about £235 new whereas this AI lens only cost me £46. Looks like it's in almost mint condition so quite pleased ;-)
