Tracey is right, Parade Magazine or something
similar would be all OVER this. And then I
will tell stories about how I knew you way
back before you were famous. It's a win-win!
Wow, thanks, everyone!!! I have to confess
that this photo was Kurt's idea. He's good
at stuff like that.
For those of you who don't know me all that
well -- the Navy has been huge in my life.
My father and stepmother both served, my
father reaching the rank of LCDR after
spending the first third of his naval career
as enlisted, my stepmother reaching LCDR in
the Reserves after serving many years as a
reservist on active duty. So I was a Navy
brat as a kid, bouncing from state to state
and school to school. I was even born at
Portsmouth Naval Medical Center in VA. I
almost think I was born with a sea bag.
I always swore I would never marry a sailor,
but here I am, married to my very own Chief.
He was a Petty Officer First Class when we
got married (photo is HERE), but was promoted in 2006 to Chief. He is
a Gas Turbine Systems Technician
(Electrical), which means he works on the
electrical systems for the jet engines that
propel the smaller ships. Since our wedding
in 2001, we've been stationed in Portsmouth,
VA, near Seattle, WA, and now Newport, RI.
Just what do the Americans award medals for?
Their chests are always covered in medal
ribbons while you would be unlikely to see
more than four or five on a British
serviceman with equivalent service.
Top row: Navy Commendation Medal, Navy
Achievement Medal (Kurt has 7), Navy Unit
Commendation.
Second row: Navy Meritorious Unit
Commendation, Battle E (x4), Good Conduct
(x3)
Third row: National Defense Medal (x2 -- Kurt
is unique for having two), Armed Forces
Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism
Service Medal
Fourth row: Global War on Terrorism
Expeditionary Medal, Sea Service (x4), Naval
Reserve Sea Service Ribbon
Most of his medals are unit commendations,
including those for serving on multiple
deployments (three to Iraq and the Persian
Gulf), and one from participating in
counter-drug operations. His Navy
Commendation Award was given to him for being
his being directly responsible for his ship
passing a major inspection, and his Navy
Achievement Medals (of which he has seven)
were awarded for his hard work on multiple
deployments spread over four ships.
I'm a retired CPO myself (EMC(SW)). I know
how special this photo is. Check out my
photos from my retirement -- especially
"follow me, son". It still brings
a tear to my eye.
