Right Before the Tornado Warning

Right Before the Tornado Warning by blueskydesert.
On Tues I was on highway 1-25 headed to Denver, CO and I had just passed Pueblo. I had never seen clouds this close to touching down. I didn't know they had issued a tornado warning prior to pulling over to take this photo until we got hit with hail, heavy rain and wind. I couldn't see in front of me while driving so I exited the highway and was the first car to park under a bridge for shelter. It didn't take long for a other cars to do the same. We waited the storm out and we are all lucky to be safe.

I felt like a tornado chaser and now that I think about it was a little exciting! My son was very scared and excited at the same time.

Spectacular shot! I'm glad you're safe--I grew up in West Texas and we used to chase these things--until we caught one! You seem very close, and they are very unpredictable, and a little scary!

You go girl! You and Dezy are a couple of tornado chasers! So thankful you are both fine and it ended up being an exciting experience. I will mail you a warm sweater if you can't find one there in Denver. Surely you can but who wants to be cold in June? Take care!

That is way cool. I saw a 'small' tornado when I was 17 in SE Texas; I was in a cotton field in the middle of nowhere and had to take shelter in a ditch. I've wanted to see one again ever since. The only thing damaged was a fence ...the barbed wire was pulled apart and as thin as a hair in places.

Excellent job!

I think this is a great image!

Hi! I'm a storm chaser. I'd just like to do a quick PSA and mention that you should never take refuge from a tornado under a bridge or overpass. Not only will the bridge not shield you from the winds (bridges actually create a "tunnel effect", increasing windspeed), but I've actually seen roads blocked by hordes of stupid people so desperate to get under the false safety of a bridge that they parked on the road itself. This causes a bottleneck, and if a tornado does approach, you suddenly have a horde of unwilling people trapped in more or less the worst possible place -- trapped because dumb people won't let them pass.

The only thing parking under a bridge/overpass will protect you from is hail.

Just FYI the bridge thing.. Is a myth. Look it up. You are a sitting duck and the videos of people under a bridge when it happens are never directly hit. If they were they would be sucked out of the bridge. Don't get yourself killed over peoples crazy unreal stories.

Yes, I am glad that two people mentioned that. Though the picture is breathtaking I signed up to flicker just to mention to... please, please, please never hide under a bridge. I know it was mentioned before.... but, I have a friend who is a storm chaser and know a person who died from hiding under a bridge. Their truck was shot out from under it and they were ripped from the side of the bridge into the other side. Not harping... just adding some safety warnings.
