how many tries till you got this shot?
ry-o-vision (40 months ago | reply)
nice work. i'm guessing you lined it up w/ your face so you could get a focal point easier w/ the remote? i'll have to read once your blog comes up. by the way, i made the lightbox (photo coming soon)...thanks for the tip!

"probably about 70 or so"
it was worth it.
wow man, great work :|
djdphotos (40 months ago | reply)
about 70 is turning into an easy night's work... i need to try some less challenging shots...
or maybe i need to try some more shots... maybe i can fill and 8GB with attempts before i get the one i like... now that's something to reach for ;-)

omg, I have so much to say. First of all, love this shot, I always love action shots and this came out great, the focus is perfect... plus the selective coloring looks awesome with it.
Secondly... read your blog, you mentioned my pic! Squeee! And lol about your comment there.

mm I'm not used to do that ammount of shots for a take.
I have a memory card of 2GB, wich allows me to take mm..300 pictures (in high resolution and bla bla...lesser resolutions allow me to 1000 or more)
and when I travel to another province or wherever, THAT is the number of pics I can take until I come back, so I try to save space in the card, just in case.
but yeah..I guess trying and trying is a great way to get a better shot.
djdphotos (40 months ago | reply)
i'm addicted to RAW, so it's about 12MB per pic for me, so i could chew through a 2GB in no time... i have two 8GB cards and three or four 2GBs to use... in a pinch ;-) when i'm traveling i definitely don't want to run out of space... and would hate having a low res version of a great shot...
so i end up with tons of high-res versions of crap... funny how it works out that way, huh?

i think being great at throwing a yo-yo is usually inversely related to being good in social situations, so don't sweat it.
djdphotos (40 months ago | reply)
sadly i'm bad at both... probably because i only practiced with the yo-yo in social situations... black eyes were on the house, so to speak!
dorsalfin (40 months ago | reply)
Great effort once again. Superb result also. I don't think I've broken the 60 shot barrier trying to get what I wanted, so maybe I'm not setting my bar as high as yours!

Simply awesome Derrick!!! This is captured to perfection, the angle just works and the B&W with a strong selective colour is spot on... Great bokeh too, but it's the yoyo that jumps straight out of the screen that finishes this off perfectly.
Love it!

Love this shot. And as always, I love your write-ups!
The D90+50mm is also my preferred kit, but the camera must have been kind of close, no? When I first saw this I figured you must have done it with a longer lens...weren't you a little nervous about throwing a yo-yo at your D90?

Cool shot Derrick.
I love it. Very creative – how many did you take before getting this one? I’d say it’s perfect. Really nice DOF too – that along with the selected color really makes this pop.
I think I might wear my AF/MF switch out too. I shoot a lot through a 6-stop ND filter early in the morning. It’s almost pitch black looking through the viewfinder so the camera really can’t focus on its own. I have to do the same – focus where I want with no filter, add filter, set to MF and go!
I loved yo-yos as a kid. Had several Duncans – even one that had batteries and lit up. At the time, it was probably my favorite.
PS - congrats on Explore!

BTW, you've been blogged, Derrick. This photo in particular was what ultimately inspired me to start my own Project 365. (I have a credited thumbnail in my post linking here; if you want me to remove it just let me know)
djdphotos (40 months ago | reply)
Wow, can't even begin to tell you how flattered I am... I think you are going to really dig the 365... I guess I can only speak for myself, but I feel as though it is changing the way in which I see the world... The Yo-yo is a good example. The original ideal for a shot tonight was a poker shot that I will try later... but when i got home and saw the yo-yo sitting on the counter, i instantly came up with the idea for the posted photo... I'm thinking more photographically, so to speak... and secondly, a few months ago I would not really have had much of an idea of how to capture the shot... after toying around with the camera, it is becoming second nature, so now I really am starting to have a feeling for what items need to change for me to get the image I want...
I think you are going to love it, and it's very fun to see your own style change through time... even over the past month I can tell a difference in my shots.
oh, and with respect to throwing the yo-yo at the camera... my biggest concern was over the string of the yo-yo snapping... i have had that yo-yo since highschool, at least... which puts it at around 15yrs old!!!
clayton - i think the final tally out of the cam was about 70 or so, but there were about 40 or 50 that were of me in a different location and without the dutch angle, which just didn't work.

that must have taken a while, and was worth it, great image....i wonder how concise it would be if not in B/W
also the positioning of the yoyo is really great, wilson'd the face
