In Fact and KMZ on Chateaudun
Situated in a row of gloomy Paris bank buildings, the chateaudun art squat lit up the quarter at night for over four years.
The light installation was done by Eric Perier and involved handpainting flourescent light tubes with different colors. I lived in a sea-blue room not pictured here. The windows would stay lit until everyone went to bed. On event and party nights, this meant until the first metro around 5:30 a.m.
When it began, this was known as the "alpha male squat" because all the residents were men. After a few women moved in, it naturally became known as the "Love Squat."
This squat inspired the Artery squat in the book Bandit Queen Boogie. It was in a building owned by a huge banking and insurance company which owned many such vacant properties. It had been empty for 9 years when the artists took it over. Kilometer Zero, a group of artists and activists, was located here, among others. Residents ranged in age from 19 to 76.
In Amsterdam, one of KMZ's members lived in a "legal squat," one of those practical Dutch things in which owners of empty buildings let artists live and work in them until they are ready to renovate and rent out the buildings commercially.

Wow, you have caught the building, at exactly the moment of twilight, that blue sets off the colours so well. Good timing.

that's amazing how this was done i think.. actually letting people with good intentions make use of space instead of letting it goto waste. i've never heard of that before.

this has a very "rear window" vibe.
not just in the subject matter but also the colour and texture. reminds me of that film.
