The Oiran Wakayanagi 1914

The Courtesan Wakayanagi (Young Willow) of Daimonji-ro House, Yoshiwara.

Her Obi (sash) is tied in a Karuta-Musubi (knot), the obi is intended to be so broad and so high that only the head is visible above it, leading to the nickname ‘Obi Shigasaki’ or sash-exposing-the-criminals-head a joke referring to the ancient custom of exposing severed heads after public executions. This is according to “The Nightless City” by J.E. de Becker, first published in 1899 (page 97).
