Jesus Is...
This sculpture was carved out of a tree that was on the Calvary Temple property for a long time. The tree and the little white farm house that was near it were landmarks. Unfortunately the farm house had become a safety hazard and had to be torn down. In the process of the deconstruction, the heavy equipment crushed the tree's root system. Such things are not uncommon in construction zones.
The inscription "Jesus is Lord" is carved on the "stones" surrounding the base. The concept is a cross, tongues of fire (Acts 2), the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, and rocks. It was fun watching the artist out there with his chainsaw making this come to live.
This month I've been having a lot of issues with weather and time. When I had time, the weather was bad. When the weather was good, the time was bad. I was prepared to take this picture a week earlier, and the light would have been very dramatic. A major storm was immanent, and we had half the sky covered in black clouds with the evening sun pouring in from the side. Unfortunately by the time I got everything set up I would have been struck by lightning several times and soaked. The evening I took this, there was a light sprinkle. By the time I got the picture set up, the rain started coming down hard.
Compositionally, this was a difficult picture to set up. I'm still not quite happy with it, and I may attempt to redo this picture in the future. The cross is rather short, so to make it seem taller I tried to get lower to the ground--which of course makes the solar light a prominent feature. If I move too far to the left I get the road in the background, if I move too far to the right, I get a playground in the background. There is a tree line and a pond to worry about in the background, and there wasn't much I could do about that merger with the tree and the dove. If I shot from the other side, I have telephone wires, the church itself, parking lot, road, etc. I'm pretty sure I can get a better print, but I'm going to have a challenge making a better composition.
Again I apologize for the crappy scan using my company's Xerox. There's a lot of subtlety that is missing in the scan that is present in the picture. I'm still not satisfied with the picture, and if I can redo it better in the future I'll update this picture.

Great Falls 2
Shot at Great Falls on the Virginia side. The shoreline you see belongs to Maryland. I had to wait for a kayak to get out of the picture first. This picture represents the first of my "Print a Month" project. The goal is to make at least one new picture and dark room print each month for 12 months. This month has had its share of troubles, but look for many improvements over the next 12 months.
The print was made using Slavich Unibrom 160 Grade 4 fiber based paper. It's a single-weight paper, which I actually kind of like. The downside is the terrible paper curl, but the long toe of the paper favors scenes like this.
I have to apologize for the poor scan. I used the office copier because my computer at home is not working. I can't plug any peripherals (including the scanner or printer) without causing the computer to die. The black areas actually do have detail, you just can't see it from the scan.

Great Falls 1
Great Falls on the Virginia side. You are seeing the Virginia border along the banks of the Potomac River. This picture represents the first of my "Print a Month" project. The goal is to make at least one new picture and dark room print each month for 12 months. This month has had its share of troubles, but look for many improvements over the next 12 months.

Sunset at the Harbor
This was the last usable picture I took, with the sun peaking through the clouds and the warm light glowing off the water. Considering the slow start this night, this was a great picture to finish on.

Little Girl Enjoying the Fountain
I took a few pictures of this fountain with the background behind it. I even took some without the little girl in front, but in many ways she completes the picture.
