Pripyat, Chernobyl

The power station, which rendered the town uninhabitable for centuries, looms on the horizon, two-and-half kilometres away.

Such a beautiful shot. The composition is wonderful, and I love the muted colours.

una historia de arquitectura silenciada eternamente. existentes sin alma,
con mucho que contar, pero sin placer ni derecho de hacerlo.

a history of architecture forever silenced. Existing without soul,
with much to tell, but without pleasure or right to do so.

история архитектуры, навсегда замолчали. Существующие без души,
с гораздо рассказать, но без удовольствия или право сделать это.

I still love looking through these, they're just so amazingly beautiful and haunting at the same time.

fantastic shot and awesome set of images. Makes me feel quite sad and odd looking at them. Your very brave for going and taking them.

Fascinating and slightly spooky looking deserted town.

This would have to be taken from the air, this is far too high to be taken from another high rise?

    12. blinkofaneye (35 months ago | reply)

Hi nztony, it was from the 16th floor of a block of flats but I agree it does look higher.

Blinkofaneye, wow, what a quick response! I saw your Blog on the BBC Website and found your Flickr Photostream from there.

Dam - I got it wrong, it wasn't from the air! I work in a 13 Storey Office Block and I tried to imagine what a photo would look like from up that high. I also looked at the tall towers in your photo on the opposite corner from where you took your photo and wondered if the same towers were built on the opposite side of the complex, which I guess was the tower you were shooting from.

Don't you mean decades and not centuries? This didn't happen 200-300 years ago. Good pictures, but the caption is like one sentence and wrong lol?

Very cool shot but so creepy - also to any gamers out there does this area not look like the building on Call of Duty 4 MW online map?

I think you meant for "decades" not centuries uninhabitable since it has only been like 30 years since this nuclear disaster occurred.

    20. jennyc42071 (13 months ago | reply)

but i thought nuclear power is safe??? i mean, that is what a bunch of freaking morons keep telling everyone
people please think about it... they meant centuries because no one can live there until the radioactivity has decreased to "safe" levels, and that will take centuries therefore making the area uninhabitable for centuries

The half life of the radiation is at a safe point. They have opened the site to tourism already.
