Death of a Highwalk

Death of a Highwalk by blech.
122 Leadenhall is finally being demolished to make way for a Richard Rogers skyscraper that's already got a stupid "cute" nickname (in this case, The Cheesegrater).

Until the end of January you could go up some stairs from Leadenhall Street, around the podium level of the existing building, and cut around to Bishopsgate. If you were very cheeky, you could nip up the fire escape to the top of an old Midland Bank building. Now it's all closed, and there are excavators doing a good job of ripping up the concrete.

I suspect nobody else cares, but I liked the idea of highwalks and their fragmented remains, and it's sad to see another go.

Yes, I used to enjoy that one, especially as you'd end up right next door to my office. In fact, at one point I could sit at my desk and watch the odd curious individual discovering that walkway.

I only ever went up there once, on a Sunday, and was careful to make sure nobody noticed.

I did wonder if the people in 122 Leadenhall ever cared about the trespassers.

They were always a part of my lunchtime wanders, although I never made it up the Midland Bank building - I saw them ripping down buildings yesterday while wandering but didn't get much of a chance to explore.

am disappointed that I'm not going to be able to wander further ... only just found them.

I'm intending to write a big post / essay / thing (maybe even video) on the highwalk system. It's good to know someone else is interested.

It's recently lost another small portion: the bit north of London Wall, which still has a bridge to Tower 42, is now inaccessible because the entrance arch to the reclad tower on Broad Street (I think it's no 55-64?) has removed the staircase.

ah, yep, just over the walkway? I wandered over, it's all boarded up with Trespassers Doom signs...

I wonder if anyone actually watches those myriad CCTVs that seem to sneak a look at every square inch.
