The Untitled Chair Project

The Untitled Chair Project

SYNOPSIS
In an effort to help raise awareness about the dire need for bone marrow donors, I am proposing a portrait photography series about people within varying environments with the common element of an ordinary chair.
THE FACTS
The international Bone Marrow Database Worldwide is a voluntary effort on behalf of individuals who are registered as potential bone marrow transplant donors. The best chance of finding a match is with a donor of similar ethnicity.
RATIONALE
Why include a chair in this photography series? A chair provides rest, support, relaxation, a place for contemplation, a gathering for individuals, permission to interact with others. To have individuals photographed with the chair and to have them sign the surface of the chair, is to encourage people to sign up with the donor registry and raise awareness about types of medical procedures that rely on the selfless act of giving on this type of truly humanitarian level.

Martin. Donor. Daddy. Husband. A hero.

The "Belly Button Connections" Project

In praise of belly buttons everywhere I'm out to elevate them into icons for life support. My mission is to bring attention to the critical need for bone marrow donor support through my photography. Whether you have an "innie" or an "outie," my photographs of our "first scar" shows that we all have a common connection to one another. Many are not aware of the need in the medical arena for cord blood and bone marrow donors. The simple donation of an umbilical cord from a mother, or a mouth swab test, could possibly save a life. The hope of the Belly Button Connection is to connect with people of all ethnic backgrounds to share information about being a donor.
