Schotia brachypetala is endemic to Southern Africa and is a 4-12m tall
shub or small tree characterised by a proliferation of masses of
bright red or crimson flowers clustered along the branches.
Schotia brachypetala flowers in the spring, when the nectar is dripping from the flowers. Rainbow Lorikeets come from near and far to the plant in their dozens, screeching and ultimately falling about in a drunken stupor from the intoxicating nectar. The striking flowers are followed by 10cm long bean pods.
I photographed this at the front gate of an acreage property a few years ago on Dog Trap Road Ourimbah on the NSW Central Coast.
Thanks to Tatters for this ID.Appreciated.
