Pinhole: Virginia Park

Pinhole: Virginia Park by Matt Callow.
LARGER.

Made with a paint can pinhole camera, using Panatomic-X Aerographic film (5" wide roll film with sprocket holes about same size as 135 film; an older version of this), developed in Diafine.

Contact print on to expired Kodak Polycontrast, developed with Dektol applied with a paint brush.

Update: Looks like this tree is becoming a movie star: annarborchronicle.com/2009/06/27/ann-arbor-park-gets-movi...

Wow that looks great, and what a fantastic film! If only I'd known this stuff existed, it would be ideal for something I'm working on, instead I bought paper. How much is on a roll? where did you buy it and what does it cost?

@Alspix: I guy I know picked up a 2000ft(!) roll of the stuff on Ebay, I don't remember what he paid for it, but I chipped in for 100ft. Keep your eye on the 'bay, it turns up on there from time to time...

How thick is the film base, Matt? Will it stay flat or will it curl up? I'm thinking of getting some and cutting 4x5 sheets with a guillotine in a dark room, but I suspect the film base will be too thin.

Matt Callow  Pro User  says:

@Zaphod: it is very thin. It's designed to be exposed and processed without coming into contact with human hands, consequently when you do handle it, it crimps quite easily. And it's pretty staticky, so it attracts lots of dust and cat hair. It doesn't have much lateral curl, but it does hold some of the curl from the roll.

I am planning to cut some down to use in 4x5 holders, and it should work just fine, as long as you're not looking for totally clean negatives, and see the above issues as features not bugs...

Thanks Matt. Let me know if your plan works. I love homebrew. I think one can easily make tabs or stops for a guillotine that'll allow you to cut 4x5 sheets in the dark with just one or two cuts, and minimal handling. Definitely worth a try.

I use 70mm aerographic film in a Hasselblad, and I'm am using a reclaimed 178mm f/2.5 Aero-Ektar for a portrait project.

Quite simply amazing indeed. Instant fav for knowledge of how much craftmanship has gone into this. I am jealous and impressed.

A'llo!!!!
I miss HOME!!!
This is my childhood PARK!!
I grew up on Charlton Street (one block away).
THIS TREE - my Dad carved my intials in this tree for me within a heart but I bet its well grown over (1970s).
I'm far-far away now in Ireland but my Dad is the only one left living in the Charlton house.
Is there a way I could get a copy???
It would mean the world to me!!!!
Waiting to hear from you!
Smiles,
lil' me
