efo...as to "why the paintbrush", I would hazard a guess that it is for the glorious uneveness of the developer application, which adds to the texture and random imperfections in the image.

Efo: Yep the paintbrush application leads to uneven development, which seems to work well with simple, cleaner images. There's more fun for me to have with this technique, I'm sure...
