The Periodic Table of Periodic Tables

My weekend project.

I kept thinking about how clichéd and pervasive (and fun) the periodic table framework has become, and I thought, "Hey, there's no periodic table of periodic tables." I Googled it and I was right. So I made one. Consider this v 1.0.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////////////

March 24, 2010 update: Updated to v 1.1 to fix errors and optimize. The zoomable/clickable version at www.keaggy.com/periodictable is now fully operational, even if it's a bad way to use Flash.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////////////

The big categories ended up being Foodstuffs, Beverages, Elements, Noble geeks, Communication, Design gases, Music series, Earth technologies, Awesomements, Objectments and the Undiscovered.

Dear chemists, datageeks, wet blankets, etc: Please don't look for anytrue periodicity or science to the organization — it's just supposed to be a little bit fun and not a little bit sarcastic. There may be no end to the Internet, but this might just be the end of the misused periodic table.

Sources: Internet Database of Periodic Tables, jonesthought, Google, Wikipedia, curiosity, restlessness, etc.

Best viewed larger, duh. Actual size 100" x 60".

    There's a Periodic Table of Science Bloggers - j.mp/PTforSB - hope you can find an element for it (Sb would be good)

    36,000 views -- thanks everyone!

    Last night I fixed a numbering error and did a minor re-ordering (I mean of course 42 should be galaxy, right?).

    Also, the web version at www.keaggy.com/periodictable is now fully functional. Thanks again, glad you like this.

    Well done!

    @valery: Yes, that's element 72 here. I used the "old" shape b/c I figured the well-recognized PT configuration would be best to catalog all the variations I'd come across.

    I like the idea. I can't find the Tetrahedral PT though. Is there room for this one? Or this one?

    The recursion gets even better: The Periodic Table of Periodic Tables is now listed in the Database of Periodic Tables.

    "Yo dawg, I herd u like periodic tables, so we put a periodic table in yo' periodic table, so you can look up elements while you look up elements."

    The zoomable/clickable version at www.keaggy.com/periodictable is not yet fully operational ...

  27. ★keaggy.com (38 months ago | reply)

    @rfarahdj: It is, but my server's been slammed so things are running slow. Getting hit by BoingBoing, Mefi, Make Magazine, BuzzFeed, Mental Floss, HOW Magazine, Neatorama, StumbleUpon and more has slowed things down.

    We used to have a periodic table of the vegetables print in our kitchen when I was a kid. I didn't get the joke until many years later, in chemistry class.
