Riot fuel

Just part of the aftermath of the UEFA Cup Final between Rangers and Zenit St Petersburg on 14 May 2008. An estimated 100,000 Rangers fans (and considerably fewer Zenit fans) descended on Manchester for the match, most planning to watch on big screens in designated "fan zones" around the city.

Despite drinking starting in earnest around breakfast time, most of the day seemed to pass without incident. However, when the big screen in Piccadilly Gardens broke down just before the start of the match, things descended pretty rapidly into chaos.

If you're looking for the root cause I don't think you have to look much further than this tanker, parked in Piccadilly Gardens where the trouble erupted.
