Ducks in the Mail: At the Post Office by birdyboo.
For several years we were able to let our Indian Runner Ducks free range but despite efforts to protect them and still allow them freedom we lost most of the flock. We restocked with ducks from Holderread's in Oregon and they came by USPS Express Mail.

They arrived healthy and eager to check out their new surroundings.
This photo has notes. Move your mouse over the photo to see them.

If you want to add a predator-proof night pen... email me. I let my ducks roam free in the day (but I'm in a suburb so it's just a yard) but at night I lock them up tight to keep them safe from racoons, owls, opossums and such.

My gosh! Thanks everybody. As you can see this was actually at the post office. They are very careful with the live shipments, which have a long history in this country and which are the mainstay of the small and speciality poultry trade.

It was first thing in the morning here and the post office was busy but everyone was very nice while we checked their condition.

It is possible to ship poultry like this because when they hatch they have a couple days of food from the retained yolk. This took 2 days. They were given water and fed as soon as we got home and all survived this long trip in excellent condition.

@tifotter Thanks for the offer! Unfortunately night was never our problem. Foxes hunt day and night. They were taken during the day while they were out.

We have 10 acres and although we have an electric fence surrounding the property it has not deterred the fox.

We have not lost ducks any since we began keeping them penned except for 1 that was out of the pen for a brief outing during the day.

Thank you so much everyone for these wonderful comments. I'm especially glad to hear that seeing this brought back memories of getting chicks or ducks in the mail. There are few things cuter than opening a box of these babies.

I only wish this was a movie so you could see the wiggle factor. Indian Runners are very active and as you can see curious too.

Thanks too for letting me know how well this is doing in Explore. It's fun for me to know more people will see my favorite ducks but also that they will know about the fine job the people at the USPS do handling these live shipments and the care they take with them.

@ion buck Yes the yellow is replaced with either white or a tan colour in the ones that are of the fawn and white pattern. The dark ones are in the pattern of the mallard duck.

I can tell you any time you get a group of these ducks together you will have some that look like they just got up from a hard night of partying and some that look like they are ready to boogie as well as a few that look like they would like to find a quiet place to hide. The range of expressions is always fun to see.
