Gitta and friends

Merry

Gitta and friends by Claudecf.
1941 in Niort. The four ladies were all normally quite chubby, but with the war on and not much to eat, they had lost lots of weight and were quite slim

I'd be really grateful, if the flare could be removed! I have no idea where to start.

I parked a redo that uses the minimum of invasion necessary to clean it up. I admit this is tough to retouch this sort of damage but if approached logically, it can be rescued from the light streak which is really the only defect of consequence. The problem is that to someone who has the tools available, it will take some hours to do the job. I have a hard time resisting a challenge. I can post an old photo that could take a day or two if you don't develop a path of attack and less than an hour if you think outside the box.

Note that this edge treatment of the print border is called a deckle and was very popular during that era and does help date it to the war era. And before you decide it was a silly treatment, you should know it was devised to replicate the edges of hand laid paper. There was deckle edge print paper available at the time. The true look can be achieved by wetting a stripe where you want the effect with a small brush or q-tip and wait until it's soaked. Lay a steel rule along your mark and carefully rip the excess paper off. Pliers and any other implements are fair game. A quicker route to produce the effect is with a deckle cutting scissors which recently can be found at craft stores. I found several styles but bought the one similar to this. I like it even though it was really cheap.

If folks want a guide to the logical steps to take in repairing this photo. I can write one up and post a quick Acrobat .pdf.

Claudecf can choose to post the repair or not,
Mike
