Charter Street Ragged School and Working Girls Home

Built as a church mission, a school for poor children, and a place where young women working as shop assistants and servants could live.

Lowry, Frederick Engels, Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill and Gene Hunt have all walked here, although Gene Hunt was only here as a fictional character. Dickens based Hard Times on this area.

Tthe remains of at least 40,000 dead people, mostly children, are behind that dark stone wall.
