Elefanten - operations bunker, Stockholm
|
Sweden is littered with operations
centres, bomb shelters and hidden
secrets. Because of Sweden's proximity
to Russia, precautions were taken in the
1960s and 70s to prepare for a nuclear
war. The Elefanten ("The
Elephant") operations center was
constructed in northern Stockholm and
was ready to be used in 1977. Primarily,
it was to be used by the civil defense.
It has a twin operations center in the
south of Stockholm called Vargen ("The Wolf").
Naturally, the Elefanten operations center was never used, and so with its filtered air and sheltered location, it today stands testimony to the designs, psychology, colours and mechanics of Cold War era Sweden.
