"It's Fresher"

Dimling's Candy Shops

John Dimling was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1852. After emigrating to the United States in 1869 with $10 to his name, he took a job as an apprentice in a confectioner's store in Baltimore. Several years later he toured Pittsburgh as one of many stops with the Frostburg Marching Club. Instead of continuing with the club to Cincinnati, he remained in Pittsburgh and again found work as an apprentice confectioner. In 1875, John took his savings of $400 and started his first candy shop on Fifth Ave. Aside from being credited with introducing lemon snaps and coconut cakes to Pittsburgh, John was also the co-founder of the Western Savings and Deposit Bank and Oakland Savings and Trust Co. John Dimling died August 27, 1939 at the age of 87.
