      Sandra, the image is misleading because of the flash. It was in deep shade of a tree, so the background is dark.

      It took some closer inspection, but there are legs and eyes on those thorns! Very cool bugs and photograph!

      Sean, they are pretty big for a USA bug. It's been a while, so I don't remember exactly how tall one would be. I don't think they are rare, but I'm not very in the know about most Texas insects.
