Bar-tailed Godwit, Limosa lapponica, juvenile

Rare vagrant to California. Some breed in Western Alaska, but most breed in the Old World Arctic, migrating as far south as New Zealand. A female was recently found to have flown 7,145 miles (11,500 kilometers) NONSTOP from Alaska to New Zealand—without taking a break for food or drink. This lost bird was photographed in the fog, on the sandspit, Montana de Oro State Park, San Luis Obispo Co., CA USA August 31, 2010
