Night delivery in New York

Night delivery in New York by billadler.
A photo in a series of nighttime photographs I took in Manhattan without a tripod or flash. Most of these photographs were shot at ISO 3200. While it's a challenge taking low light photos without a tripod or other support, not having to set up a tripod offers a lot of advantages, namely you can take pictures more quickly. With a tripod, I would have missed this moment.

This one evokes a strong feeling... loneliness? fatigue? I'm not sure but it's a powerful shot. I particularly like the oppressive bright lights in the foreground contrasted with the dark night in the background. Great work!

I agree. It offers a unique opportunity. No set-up. Just shoot. It must have been raining - hence the paper bag on the bike seat. A guy with a lot on his mind. I like your approach to pictures. You make some very seemingly mundane moments seem profound. THanks@! It has extra significance since I will be heading to NYC in 2 weeks! Thanks!

As already said, it's a great shot , and is very atmospheric. Much better to take this approach of using high ISO, no tripod for that spontaneous look, and all the flexibility it offers.

By the way, I'm amazed at how good this camera of yours does at such a high sensitivity. I had totally discounted the idea of geting a compact as a backup to my DSLR, and for times when a smaller camera would be easier to carry, but you have me convinced with this shot! Take a look at the glowing report from this excellent website -- and the test shots, especially at 3200 ISO:

Thanks. What I really want to be able to do is be as spontaneous with taking photos at night as during the day. That's not possible, of course, everywhere, but in cities and in other places on nights with a full moon, it can be doable. I'm working on developing a steady hand: this tripodless photo was shot at 1/14 second. --Bill
