i like the concept but the hand, head, brake
are blurry, which kind of ruins the idea of
the legs being the only blurry thing. I'm not
so pedantic about brand names though for the
sake of the picture it'd look better without
that as a distraction... good concept, nice
shot but not safe worthy.
But, you held that manual exposure for far
too long. Um, you definitely want to give a
sense of movement and speed, but not at the
expense of looking like he has no legs. Shoot
again with a shorter exposure time and see
how it works out.
I think it's great. I love the choice of
subject, the blurry legs and especially the
electric point. It expresses the futility of
all we strive for, and portrays how I feel
when I do my excercises.
I don't LIKE the green, but I think it works
in this picture- it conjures up a sort of
institutional monotonous feeling which
complements the activity. However, the
blurred face (I don't mind it on the hands)
and distracting lettering don't help the
image. A shorter exposure would probably be
better.
cute, but the exposure was too long or you
were riding too fast--i don´t care for the
cut-off torso look that you achieved. i
think a slightly less frantic pace would have
actually given us more of a sense of motion
rather than dismemberment. also, why the
cheesey tint?
@k2ski: As soon as I read your comment, I knew you
were right about the logos. I tried cloning
out the logos on the rollers, bottles, and
bike frame, and it added a lot to the shot --
less is more. Maybe I'll reshoot and
resubmit.
@Mr. Mark: It takes some getting used to, but getting
started isn't that hard, you just have to
commit to it and then not fall off. =]
To all who complained about the exposure
length:
This was an experiment with shooting tethered
from my laptop. It was a real pain because
of the transfer times (I need to get a
shutter remote with interval timer). Since I
couldn't control where my legs would be when
the shutter opened, and the cycle times were
really long (> 2 minutes, I think) I
decided to have the shutter open for a full
pedal revolution (~ 0.8 seconds) Looking at
the results, I think I'd like to try a range
from 1/4 to 1/2 sec. This would minimize the
"cloud of legs" and help sharpen up
the rest of the shot.
To all who complained about the green tint:
Maybe if I'd titled it "Green Tunnel of
Pain" it would have worked better for
you. =]
I think tomgardner put it best:
I don't LIKE the green, but I think it works
in this picture- it conjures up a sort of
institutional monotonous feeling which
complements the activity.
Looking at it more, I might also try removing
the bottles and cages, and the seat pack and
taillight next time.
You could also take a picture of another
subject. Because this one is perfect for me, don't
make it too clean. The flat green light works
so good in combination with sweating on a
bike and going nowhere. (If you are going to work on this shot, maybe
you should have a look at the front wheel.
There's a little plastic in the wall that
interferes with the wheel.)
EDIT: The upper is ok, it really adds
dimension to the room, the lower is the one
that has a conflict with the wheel.
@PeterKvG: Thanks for the vote of
confidence. It's not that I'm unhappy with
the result, it's more that I would have liked
to experiment more with different settings,
and the agonizing cycle time made that
unappealing to try.
Which plastic? Are you talking about the
outlet on the wall, or the one on the
baseboard which is mostly obstructed by the
front tire? Or both?
LOL Karen! Yes, my feet were moving so fast
they went back in time. Now they're younger
than the rest of me. Actually I was aiming
for about 70 since that would make a full
revolution take about 0.8 seconds.
They're Campy Biodynamic bottles - originally
from a bike store (back in the day.) I don't
think Campy's made them since the late 80s -
early 90s. I got two new/unused sets several
years ago from a spare parts mail order
store, but I haven't seen any more for years.

hmmm... not a fan of the monochrome color choice here. a good shot though. i'd have also removed the brand name at teh bottom, and the water bottles?
i do like the two outlets though. nice work, but not safe worthy.

what I wanna know is how do you get started on this contraption?! hand & break are blurry. This one's going nowhere, ha ha! get it?

The question I always want to know on monochromes is why. It does nothing but distract. A good grab but...Green!?!

this is an awesome idea. very creative. and the greenness adds to the monotonousness of exercise..

Freaky, where have your legs gone?
I really like this photo I'd happily put it in the safe if your face was in focus. Sadly it it just too blurred, and that spoils it for me.

a nice experiment, but I don't think it came off this time. to be striking the legs should be the only things blurry, and I don't get the green tint.

what's wrong with the green tint - I'm guessing a full color version wouldn't be especially interesting given the generic setting.
Fred [feukiou] [deleted] (94 months ago | reply)
This one is original enough for the safe. the tint is cool and I don't care about the blurry face.

I agree that the face could be cripser, but considering the shutter speed you must have used, it works. I also like the monocramatic tint.
