Donington church, Lincolnshire

Donington church, Lincolnshire

I have been looking through some photagraphs which I had taken last summer, and finding those which did not really work in colour but were suitable for conversion to B&W.

This one worked better as a B&W, I think the shadows give it a 3D effect.

Millennium fire beacon stand

Millennium fire beacon stand

This is a photo of a millennium fire basket. They are reproductions of the Fire Beacons which were lit in the time of Elizabeth the First to warn of the approach of the Spanish Armada. A chain of fire beacons was created across the country; each beacon was lit as they sighted another beacon on the horizon and so eventually warned London of the impending Spanish fleet. Elizabeth the First was eating Goose at the time of the eventual defeat of the Armada and so declared that all Englishmen should eat goose at the following Christmas. The tradition continued into the time of Dickens, but Scrooge bought a Turkey in A Christmas Carol and seems to have changed the British pallet. And a very merry Christmas to you all.

These were built and lit to welcome in the last millennium.

The old mill, Melbourne

The old mill, Melbourne

Now this picture is a bit of a fabrication. The day was dull and grey, the sky was leaden, the result above is a credit to modern computer technology. The only alternative, which I tried, was a B&W creation, but it still needed an inspiring sky.

Lower pond wier

Lower pond wier

Another of my Calke Park pictures. In the grounds there are several linked ponds and due to drought they are very low. This weir shows unusual activity due to the low water, the normal water depth is up to the bank on the far side. The water normally is just sliding down the concrete slide seen at the top.

River-Derwent Derby

River-Derwent Derby

Due to continual Grey skies I have been forced to consider textures to rescue what are otherwise scrap pictures. I have not done this before but I am astonished by the result.

Not so sure they are not still scrap though:-)
