We're importing more and more crude and refined products. Since supplies are limited, that means we're taking it from the rest of the world. U.S. demand is making prices go up globally. There are other effects. Fisherman in Indonesia can't go to sea because of fuel shortages -- Indonesian refiners make more money shipping their gasoline across the Pacific to the United States. In many African nations, fuel shortages are creating long electrical blackouts, even for essential facilities like hospitals. In south Asia, fuel shortages mean irrigation pumps aren't running.
