Market Street cyclist getting the squeeze
For whatever reason, the motorist is squeezing this cyclist although there was plenty of room in the left lane. The driver is driving over the sharrow symbol, which is supposed to indicate that cyclists may take the whole lane here. Market Street near Powell in San Francisco, California

And she's not wearing a helmet and has long hair.
Professional Recreationalist (67 months ago | reply)
...she's beautiful and she only needs a helmet is to protect herself from the car.
...the lane is paved and so the motor-vehicle has an unwavering right-of-way over all others...
...stupid cyclist.
...nice capture Richard !

PR - I was referring to the research in the UK which suggests that unhelmeted long hair is the best way to encourage motorists to give the cyclist more space when overtaking.

Profesional Recreationalist, there is no evidence that wearing a helmet makes much difference. The driver is in the wrong here as it looks like the orange light is due to the flash, otherwise the drivers is making a turn and shoud've waited.
Great photo.

kick that car

I pounded a car that hooked me today. The driver looked straight ahead to avoid looking at me. I usually go with the flow -- all of us make mistakes on occasion -- but this guy's driving was especially bad. I don't have any idea what he was thinking, though most likely he wasn't thinking at all.

I'm with kurtz. Kick/punch/key the car.

This is a good capture Fritz. I would definitely give that car a friendly tap to let the driver know he is too close. These days, I refrain from pulling out the frame pump in situtions like this.

I had a close call this evening as I went round a bend in the road a car came round well over the centre line. the driver spotted me and pulled over and I stopped - all OK though :-)

I might thump a window or slap a fender -- actually denting is uncharacteristic of me.
In today's instance, though, the dude cut *right* in front of me, and then he slammed on the brakes to cut off traffic in the right turn lanes that we were both passing -- insane and earning him honks from the other drivers) *AND* I had my camera strapped to my wrist so when I slapped the car, my camera (inadvertently) swung around like a flail and put a good size dent in the car.

I'd love to see her kick a dent in the car too. US cities need to do much more to discourage the use of personal vehicles (and encourage more people to ride bicycles). I've heard great things about Portland and hear Chicago and NY are taking steps to become more bike-friendly.

This surprises me.
I biked around SF a bit last year; drivers gave me loads of room and it felt really safe compared to riding on roads here in the UK.

If a motorists gave us that much room in Sydney we would post this photo as Motorist of the Month and give him a prize! Of course if it was the beginnings of a right hook then it is bad.

Hi, I am writing a journal article on the design of vehicles for situational awareness in urban environments, would it be okay to use this photo as part of part of an illustration?

if someone almost kills you, take action. if someone inconveniences you, take a deep breath - life will go on. it's usually not worth risking your life over...

... that's a crazy driver who killed a perfectly innocent biker who happened to clip his mirror. you're telling me there aren't people crazier than that out there? it's a lot easier to fit a gun into a pickup truck than onto a bike bag...
