The bike car on Caltrain #225 is packed full of bikes and cyclists during the morning commute. This is just south of the Palo Alto station.

That's the most heartening thing I have seen
in a while.

This is how the bike car looks on just about
all commute-time trains here.
Problem is I couldn't get on the train
twice this year because the bike car was
full. I've also missed the bus a good
half-dozen times because the bike racks were
full.
For trips within the Valley missing the bus is okay -- it's almost
always faster to bike than to ride the bus
and I just do the bus when I'm feeling lazy.
My train trips are also bikable distances (20
miles) though the train makes the trip much
quicker.
I'm a big promoter of bicycling, but surge
in cycling does have consequences. A solution
is to add a bike car, but all of them are in
use and Caltrain doesn't have the $$$ to buy
more.

Guac Air [deleted] says:
Didn't bicycle capacity get reduced quite a
bit when they went to the new trains?

The Bombardier cars have half the capacity,
but Caltrain sometimes runs two bike cars on
Bombardier/Baby Bullet consists. The car in
this photo is the old style 32-bike capacity
car.
Adding bike capacity means removing seat
capacity, and the Baby Bullets are often
completely full during commute time. I'm
talking normal seating, not just the bike
cars.
