Cheaha Mt. An Alabama Blizzard

Cheaha Mt. An Alabama Blizzard

Ok I hear all of my Northern US and Canadian friends laughing but this is about as good as it usually gets. In the area I live in we got about 2-3 inches of accumulation, some of the areas further North in Alabama got around 5 inches. When I got up I debated whether to ride up the mountain or not, I finally decided to risk it.

The roads around here were in great shape so I figured I'd give Cheaha a shot. The roads up the mountain were in really good shape until I got to about a mile and a half from the top of the mountain and even then they were just a little slushy and weren't a problem. The wind was really cutting up and blowing the snow it was very pretty to see.

Unfortunately when I got to the entrance to the road to the very top of the mountain park rangers had the road blocked off so I was pretty disappointed about that because that's where I really wanted to go.I went up from the Eastern side which is a scenic parkway with a very good two lane highway. I had planned to go down the Western side which is a very curvy, narrow, winding road but the dad gum rangers had that blocked off as well.

There were more people on the mountain than I had ever seen. Most everybody was doing the same thing I was. All in all it was a lot of fun.

Cheaha Mountain

Cheaha Mountain

I'm fifty two years old and have lived in Alabama all of my life. The most snow I can remember us getting was in 1993 when we got 9 to 11 inches. It was devastating to the area, power was out at my house for nine days and I'm total electric so I was pretty much screwed. We were able to get out on the third day and make it to a friends house that had a fireplace. Somehow this friend was also spared the power outage he must have been living right.

I do have some old 8mm home movies from the late fifties that my Dad took after what looks like was a pretty significant snow storm but that predates my memories. It doesn't take much snow to cause chaos around here but this time the roads stayed clear and the power stayed on. By late afternoon the snow was mostly just a memory except for the higher elevations.

This was a good snow storm, just enough to make things pretty for a few hours and then it was gone. I like it like that.

Double Exposure

Double Exposure

My Daddy loved cameras.I guess he passed that love on to me.For some reason after I was born he switched to primarily movie cameras. He had an Old Kodak 8mm that had a key that flipped out from the side so that you could wind it up and that is what powered the camera.

I hated that sucker because every Christmas and birthday I had to star in our own little short film.Like most kids are prone to do especially when I was younger I was known to sometimes act like an idiot. It was funny then but dadgum embarrassing now.I know this is from 1957 I'm an only child and this has to be me.

After Dad passed Momma let someone from church borrow it and we haven't seen it since .I sure wish I had it now just for a keepsake.

I'm sure the double exposure was an accident.Check out the cloth diaper you can even see the diaper pin.Parents who have babies now days have no idea how lucky they are.
