Diving Down
Sperm whale seen from a whale watch in the village of Kaikoura, New
Zealand.
I was told that all that stippling on the surface of the water around
the whale is fish.

awesome capture a very cliched image in these times though.

Well timed, but it feels too compressed at the bottom, and the dead central placing of the whale's fluke doesn't help the sense of movement.

I could give a crap less if this is a "cliche". I'm surprised no one has called it a "snapshot" yet.
A great image is a great image.
I swear Frank, this group has gone to crap. I absolutely am unable to differentiate DMU from DM. Please fix it, somehow. I miss the old group.

Crap comment or not, I have to say that I've seen quite some whale tales before. A bit more space at the bottom would do it good.

Big deal, there are marine biologists that have thousands of shots like this. Why is this anything better than an identification image of a particular whale?

Big Frank, are you sure the guy said "fish" and not "photshop artifacts"?
I'm always getting the two confused myself.

this would be one of my most treasured pictures... you see, these are normally more appreciated by the photographer than the rest of the people
from my point of view, it lacks dramatism...

@Normal, et al:
1. Search the tag "whale".
2. Sort by "interestingness".
3. Where are the "thousands of shots"? How many have the added element of a beautiful shoreline to add context? How many have the "stippling effect"? How many have such soft lighting?
Get real. Other than the one shot of the entire whale breaching, this is the best photo of its kind on flickr.
Like I said earlier, "crap". If you want to be the original DeleteMe, why not go there?

Frank said sperm, andertho!

Mr Normal [deleted] (73 months ago | reply)
@ andertho: I did not say anything about how many images like this there are on flickr. I was referring to a real biologist. I happen to know a few and they have shown me their collection of whale identification images, and this image is no different.
I’m not the only one that feels the way I do about the image, so why even single me out?
Why are you so heated about this?
andertho (73 months ago | reply)
@normal:
"et al" means "and others".
Sorry to make you feel that you are singled out.
Why am I heated? Because this once great group has descended into the morass of inanity that is the original deleteme.
Basing "delete" comments on the fact that some marine biologist has some photos filed in a drawer somewhere in no way discusses the excellence (or lack thereof) of this particular image. Is it an often photographed subject?
Yes.
Is it more excellently done than most?
Yes.
How about we vote based on the actual quality of the image?
Oh, and does your marine biologist friend pull golfballs out of blowholes?

Challenging This one from the pool of Highly Competitive - Flickr's 100 Best because the defending pic wasnt even posted by the photographer.
Figuromo (73 months ago | reply)
well, I guess is fortunate that you capture a shot of the whale while breaching the water. However, I think the defender's has a stronger subject and lovely repetition and perspective. It's professionally done.

This is a nice capture, but I think the defender's photo is far more interesting, even if it's not actually her photo. I don't think there's anything in the rules stating that the photo has to come from the person posting it, so I can't really penalize her for that.

This image to me has much more on a number of fronts but if for no other reason than the defenders picture is blown out in the highlights by 2 or 3 stops.

love the shot! the background is cool too

nice picture, nice moment, quite not original. The defender is more interesting

It's true that the defending photo wasn't taken by the photographer. However, everyone's seen whale shots; this shot is super-cliche, and the defender's shot is a touch more original.
As for the defender's shot being blown out, the water here is also blown out, and I would say that the background needs a levels adjustment -- it's too blue.

BigFrank (73 months ago | reply)
Nonsense. While the water is *close* to white, it doesn't clip. And as for the blue? this shot was taken early in the morning and it was misty. I know what it looked like - I was there. Were you?
kimberkit (73 months ago | reply)
BF, no offense intended - I actually really thought that during the course of playing DMU, you might be less sensitive to critique.
As for the misty blue morning, I guess you're of the school of thought that doesn't believe in photoshopping images for stronger impact, because "that's what it looked like." Sorry for suggesting it.
As to the water -- there are several hot pixels at 255 in the threshold tool, actually, so I'm sure your histogram did clip. But since that's "what it looked like" that morning, you might as well leave it blown.
BigFrank (73 months ago | reply)
I took no offense. I just disagree with your assessment. "Several pixels" at 255 doesnt necessarily mean blown. More importantly, had I balanced the image more to the left the picture would look *under* exposed.
I'm not dogmatic about enhancing images for effect, I just didn't feel that it was a good idea to do so here.
