My Blurb Book Arrived!
Sooooo happy. I ordered this Blurb book last week of our trip to London, Paris & The Loire Valley earlier this year and it arrived right on time. 104 pages, 227 photographs with hard cover and dust jacket. All for half the cost of an iPhoto book. The Mac OS X version of the software was easy to use and I'm very pleased with the end result.
I was inspired to go with Blurb when I saw how nicely Sam's book turned out.
*** Note: this photo was picked up by flickr's blog for their feature on Blurb books. Cool!

Was just working on a photobook as well as my freakin Circa book (which I swore would be published in 2006, so it's crunch time) when you posted this. So I'm wondering now, why Blurb instead of Lulu?
I'm planning to use Lulu for my book... and now I see Sam's had issues with Blurb's shipping so I stuck with my original plan.
Hmm. Thoughts?

From my perspective it was the software. I've never done it before and I hated the way iPhoto was set up. Blurb's the first non-iPhoto s/w that works really well for Mac users, interface-wise.
I think the issue with Blurb's shipping seems to be that they're just getting going with the whole "supporting a business" idea - i.e. they only just hit over to allowing people to set their own prices for books ordered through the Blurb website, and the shipping is quite expensive from the standpoint of the consumer vs. the producer - if Sam were to order 200 copies of his book he [and his buyers] would see a benefit but to have them order them individually... Give Blurb time and they'll adopt a more cost-effective model for small business shooters as Lulu has. It's a question of volume and they haven't been around as long as Lulu has. All of the demand-print services are expensive on a low-order basis.

And from a canuck perspective:
Did you get slammed with import duties on top of the shipping? This is my biggest prob with all these co's... wish there was a canadian branch! I may still Blurb for a personal photo book 'cause yours is... HOT.
p.s. sorry that i'm miss 20-questions. :D

we just got our first lulu book and plenty happy with it, but i hear that the print quality on blurb is a wee bit better see article here for more on this...

how much does it cost to print 1-5 of these?
bigdaddyhame (66 months ago | reply)
TT: no duties - but then again i was only ordering one copy. I haven't heard different - you might drop a line to sam to ask him what kind of 'attention' customs gives bulk orders. I'll show you the book if I see you when you drop off that wicked print! ;)
b+h: I'm very pleased with the print quality on this... some of the images are in my Europe 2006 set. I will be adding more to the set over time now that I've processed all the images for the book.
kathy: Here's blurb's pricing/shipping page. U$D.

TT, i also just ordered a book i did for myself and a friend as a christmas gift. Two copies of a 60page or so book, no import duties from the government.
I am also super happy with the print quality, and have a couple of other books i want to do up for past trips now when i find the time.

This is such an interesting conversation. At my most recent Humber photo class; the last one for the semester, we spent the whole 3 hours talking about books, companies, the pros and cons, we saw samples and so on; but I think this book in the picture looks phenomenal. I'm going to look into blurb.

Thanks Hamish, it looks like it would make a good gift, or even as a portfolio for presentations and such.

Blurb is fantastic... I ordered a couple copies of a book for Christmas and was totally floored by the quality. Can't wait to get enough images compiled to do another book.

what is the quality of the prints like inside, and what sort of paper is it on? I've seen in the blurb forums that they use poor quality matt, is this true?

Is the quality of the "big" books better then what you see there?

may i ask... did you upload your photos from your flickr photos? I did. and then i ordered the book. i haven^t seen it yet, but i woke up in the middle of the night last night worried that all the photos from flickr will look horrible (if they took the small size flickr displays, and not the original size i always upload...)

Hello!
I just started a Handmade Photography Book group, and you should add some images of your book! The group can be found here: www.flickr.com/groups/1480148@N25/
Thanks!
