Black Chicken

I stumbled into an early morning Chinese market and its interesting merchandise of black chicken during one of my Kuala Lumpur walks. At first, I thought these are either marinated or fermented in black sauce. But the chickens are freshly dressed and have real black skins. I was told these are cooked into soup for the consumption of those who have just given birth. In the Ilocano part of the Philippines, this is similar to the post-birth practice of "agpatanggad".

For your information......it is said that this black chicken has healing properties. Chinese believe that the broth from this chicken is helpful with autism, aging and diabetes. It contains high levels of a substance (twice as much as normal chicken) called carnosine. carnosine is a powerful anti-oxident that is used greatly in supplements here in the west.

Personally, I think black chicken tastes gross. Asian people love eating black chicken, because it's suppose to be healthier for you. You can buy black chicken at any oriental grocery store.

Live silkies are available anywhere in the US. Go to any poultry show and you are likely to see dozens of them. Beside white, they are available in other varieties(feather color), like black, gray, buff, partridge, etc.
