Wave Hill Gets It![]() Wave Hill, the private arboretum in the Bronx, has taken two steps to reduce motor vehicle congestion: its has instituted an $8 parking charge, and it has removed one automobile parking space and installed a rack capable of holding up to 15 bikes.
It's so logical. If you want to reduce motor vehicle dependence, then charge people for driving, and facilitate alternatives. It's that simple. But the New York State legislature couldn't figure it out. And why is it that a private arboretum can provide bicycle parking, but Central Park can't? You sound happy in your write up. That is good.
Yeah, it seems so simple, and it is a great strategy. I have a car; I drive. However, I would not be unhappy with $5 gas (with the extra money not going to the oil companies, just an increase in gas to make driving less advantageous). The $8 park charge is similar. In Portland, OR, the Zoo has a reduced fee for people who take mass transit.
I like the idea of taking out one car space. That could be done within the city so that there are more bike racks in the area, bike parking lots, but the racks then do not interfere with pedestrians. Every one is happy. The one in this photo is about two cars spots long.
