View of the 2 old and in the distance 2 new square foot gardens, with chicken wire cages to keep out the squirrels and cats.

How do you get into the garden? I would think the wire has to be tightly attached, otherwise the squirrels will find their way in. But the wire being tightly attached would make it hard for you to get easy access to the beds.

The nearest garden in this pic, the cage fits over the outside of the box, and is very easy to just lift up.

The other one with plants in it -- the cage sits on top. 2 posts on either side help keep the cage centered. It isn't perfect, but amazingly the squirrels don't ever seem to get in.

The two new ones also just have the cages sitting on top. Again, the squirrels have never gotten in.

Even when we didn't use the cages, they squirrels were more interested in digging in the soft soil than in eating the plants.
