is the title you gave this pic a deliberate pun? cuz that building sure does look an awful lot like the Ka'bah at the center of Mecca! :)

Expect views to rocket about now, as I submitted this to Digg, and it was promoted :]

    5th avenue and what street?

  6. Matthew Haggerty (87 months ago | reply)

    5th Ave and 59th Street

  7. bhaggs (87 months ago | reply)

Mr.Thorn: Yes, it was a deliberate pun. The parallel is uncanny though. But that'll change once the wood paneling comes off.

What is with Steve Jobs and those cubes. :-)

  9. bhaggs (87 months ago | reply)

Seriously Jobs can't get away from the cube. It has been reported that Jobs personally designed the cube entrance.

  10. nathan makan (87 months ago | reply)

That right. And when the lease expires in 20 years, he has requested to take ownership of the cube. Maybe he'll live in it?

  11. hillelk0 (87 months ago | reply)

If I'm not mistaken, from that spot you can see Central Park... and you won't because of the building design. A pity.

    When is the Grand Opening?

  13. titanic panic (87 months ago | reply)

that's 5th ave/60th. It's in front of the FAO Schwartz toy store. I think FAO lost their lease or they're going to leave the space soon. Bryant Gumbel's morning show used to be filmed there.

The building used to belong to Trump but he lost it in bankruptcy to GM so it's back to being called the GM Building

Another eye-candy for MacBoys where they can go with their loose pockets and splurge on overpriced hardware... and make a fool out of themselves at the "genius bar". Or perhaps drool over Steve Jobs in black turtle-necks on $4000 27" Mac screens.

kind of small, but oh so neat...

  18. jeremedia (87 months ago | reply)

Small? The cube is simply the entrance to the underground store...

  19. Rob Boudon (87 months ago | reply)

This is rad, I'll plan to be there on opening day!

I can't wait to go and see this! I was there two weeks ago and only saw the black covering.

  21. dklimke (87 months ago | reply)

Think it will have a giant disc eject button on top?

    Apple Store - Glass Cube.
So, I did a little investigating. The veneer will not be coming down today or this weekend. Engineers are photographing it to make some alterations. Apparently Apple is not happy with the steel buckles holding the glass together. They want to use another attachment such as something that will blend better with the glass.

The projected opening of the Glass Cube and store is May 20th, 2006. The store is underground and is 25,000 SQFT

Correct me if I am wrong but didn't there used to be a big fountain right where that store is being built? Or maybe the fountain I am thinking of was on another side of the GM building. It's been a year or so since I have been there.

Enter and be transported to the Louvre.

    my apologies to IM Pei

  25. bhaggs (87 months ago | reply)

The fountain is right next to the cube actually (photo)

  26. ChrisandMei (87 months ago | reply)

I'm glad they left that there. It's actually a nice place to sit and give the feet a rest.

  27. OndraSoukup (87 months ago | reply)

    awesome -

But, does the cube still run OS 9 :) ???

Still hard to get a feel for what it will look like once complete and free of construction materials.

Look at the Glass Rectangle housing the planetarium at the NY Museum of Hatural History off Central Park! Is the where Jobs got his inspiration?
