IWU Slide20
First we have to rethink our classrooms, the learning relationships,
the ecology. We have the opportunity to transform our classrooms
into dynamic communities of learning, in which we engage in reciprocal
apprenticeships (Levy) where we are all experts and apprentices, where
we move between informal and formal learning spaces, disciplines,
bringing to the learning moment our sense of self, the willingness to
participate in the learning experience, and an understanding of
negotiation--
You have to resposition yourself within the learning circle, allowing
students to make more decisions, to aprticiapte more fully in design
& outcomes. This is not an abdication of responsibility nor is it
fooling myself into thinking I have no power in the classroom. It is
how we use that power to be effective.
Thsi is not a new notion, of course: John Dewey: “The principle that
development of experience comes about through interaction means that
education is essentially a social process. This quality is realized
in the degree to which individuals form a community group.”
