junco tidying the garden

junco tidying the garden by bgblogging.
I leave many seedheads in the garden for the birds through the end of the fall; the juncoes in particular prowl the garden beds, looking for seed and insects. I'll clean the old plants out once fall moves to winter.

I do the same thing! I don't usually clean my old stuff out until about January or February here. Great picture! I know this little guy appreciates your thoughtfulness.

I've been working on transforming our land into prime bird habitat, and so even the vegetable garden is planned with that in mind. Song and field birds are under such stress these days that every bit of tumble of copse and hedgerow, field that is not repeatedly cut for hay, and gardens with native species of plants helps them!

The juncos are back in my yard too. I clear out everything that I know is going to be buried in a snowbank anyway and I leave the rest until spring to provide perches and shelter, especially near the feeder. I can't believe how often I'm filling up that feeder these days!

Great shot of the junco. They usually don't pose as nicely as the chicadees do.

I'm filling up my feeder far too often (we put ours out in November as recommended by Audubon for Vermont so as not to interfere with migration)--many many more birds than usual. I wonder what that means? A rebound in songbird numbers due to milder winters and our work on restoring habitat? Fewer feeders on neighboring farms? A cold winter heading our way?
