Poppy, Closer

Poppy, Closer by Creativity+ Timothy K Hamilton.
This is a "one frame HDR", which is not a true High Dynamic Range photo, since a real HDR is made from at least two to often 5 or more over and underexposed shots. The combination of under and over exposure, when combined at 32-bit color depth, gives a wider range of hues and tones (darks & lights) than is viewable on a monitor. A regular 8-bit digital photo JPEG has only 256 levels of light and dark.

I actually have taken some photos recently with 5 levels of exposure (-2, -1, 0, +1, and +2 f-stops). But I only have downloaded the free version of Photomatix, so I'll only be able to combine two at a time for now.

Thanks to ~Dezz~, whose wonderful and step-by-step tutorial on single-image HDR's was the source of my information on how to do this.
Thanks Desirae !!

Great shot Tim! Hey, if you have Photoshop CS2, use the HDR tool in that, I've had pretty good luck with it. :D

This is beautiful! Well, the main difference in one image or multiple image HDR is the level of noise that you get... At last, you're producing just one image...

Says who? HDR means "High Dynamic Range". There is nowhere an exact spec about how "higher" it should be. In fact, since JPGS are 8 bit per color component, even a 20 exposure HDR when saved as a JPEG only shows 8 bit of dynamic range.

It's more about what it actually shows to us (i.e what a hypothetical HDR camera would have been able to capture without clipping highlights and losing shadow detail) than how many bits of information it carries about the dynamic range.

Thus, a single JPG over and under exposed in software and then combined is perfectly capable of delivering a higher perceived dynamic range than the original. Details lost in the dark in the original image can co-exist with highlights near the clipping point in the single-frame-HDR version.

I would define a HDR result as the enhanced ability to show shadow and highlight detail *at the same frame*.

So, there...

P.S This is even more true for single-RAW-HDR files.

Lovely work, Tim. Will have to give this a go - so a big thank you for linking to the instructions. It certainly is very attractively dynamic, single or otherwise!
