Blue Mandarin

PHOTO HINT: for aquarium shots, I press the lens directly on the glass. This does three things:
1) keeps the camera steady, since most aquariums don't allow tripods, and
2) eliminates the glare from the glass, and
3) keeps the camera from getting "confused" about what to focus on (otherwise the camera often focuses on the glass)

This is a blue mandarin fish (a.k.a. Synchiropus and I've also heard them called Slpendoris or something like that) and there is also a green variety, but the blues are my favorite. They are a wonderful fish that can hover is just about any position. I had one once upon a time in my reef tank and I could watch it for hours.

And as somebody who occasionally shoots aquaruium fish, lemme tell you that it is very difficult to get the darn things into focus, especially with autofocus and a small depth of field. Camera keeps wanting to focus on the glass.

For a handheld macro shot of such a tiny fish, the depth of field is exceptional here. You've got the focus point on the eyes/head which is right where it should be. I like the composition. There is no need to include the entire fish! I have tried many times to photograph mandarine fish at my local aquarium, so I know how difficult this shot was. I would be very proud of an image like this. As far as I'm concerned, few could do better than you have here.

Thanks, kw33, it's nearly impossible to get
- something tiny (2 inches)
- that moves that fast,
- in natural light (flash would NOT work with the glass)
- with a macro attachment
- and no tripod (I DID hold the camera tighly against the glass!)

I appreciate your understanding of the difficulty level of the shot!

Nice shot indeed. Taking underwater or fishpool pictures is not a piece of cake and this looks very well. Comparing it to your other pictures however, the quality is not quite there yet. Too much distraction in the background and the sharpness could still be a bit better... an almost folio pic in my eyes...
