This splendid structure was built in 203 CE, commemorating the first
African emperor of Rome, and a native of Leptis Magna.
The arch's splendid contemporary condition is a recent product of the efforts of archeaologists.
The arch is different from other North African arches, being on four instead of two pillars. On the exterior of each pillar are depictions of the great virtues and efforts of Septimus Severus. On the interior more general depictions of military campaigns and religious ceremonies are found.
