Rainbow family member
Rainbow Gathering 2011 Quebec
Painting for the full-moon celebration
I decided to photograph my family, my brothers and sisters. I have been going to rainbow gatherings for 7 years now, and I have taken pictures of it for the past 3 years. The pictures you see are very precious since photography is not usually allowed during the event, so please be respectful to my brothers and sisters
People are love,
are magic,
are beauty
these sister and brother are the people of the future.
What is a Rainbow gathering :
Rainbow Gatherings are temporary intentional communities, typically
held in outdoor settings, and espousing and practicing ideals of
peace, love, harmony, freedom and community, as a consciously
expressed alternative to mainstream popular culture, consumerism,
capitalism and mass media.

Love your work, but the Rainbow Family strikes me as a bunch of rich people romanticizing poverty and a primitive lifestyle. I agree that consumerism and materialism are the bane of modernity, but modernity is also what allowed this photo to even exist. Afterall, there's no such thing as a organic Canon 5d Mark II.
Just a thought..

5d2 is my tool work , .. think about this , i use my tool 1-2 day during the gathering and the rest i leave its, ( so who you are to have a jugement) secondo the majority at rainbow quebec are not very rich and a lots of these people are traveller ( with artisana for living) so you can thing what you want. but dont bother me with your poor jugement
Benoit.P (21 months ago | reply)
and my 5d2 , is private use , i dont bring this in front of all , people to people use , not in the communauty

When I say "rich" I don't mean by North America standards. I mean by global standards. If a person lives in a building, has clean water, and eats everyday, then by global standards, that person is doing well.
I would imagine all of these people meet those criteria.
If the people at these gatherings really wanted to live "simply" they would move to the forest full-time instead of just paying lip service to it at annual gatherings. They don't because living in the woods and cooking over an open fire is a romantic idea, but its no more practical than every family owning a SUV and living in 10,000 square foot house.
We have to find a balance between excessive materialistic living and living like Fred Flintstone. Because without some measure of modernity, we wouldn't be able to even have this conversation. And you wouldn't be able to do all the great work that you do, Benoit.
Also, thanks for your comment on my "original" project ;)
p.s. thanks for engaging in this discussion instead of just deleting my comment.

i'm very ironic to ......
i think its difficult to judge this king of even without experiencing the even, is not just about rich ect is about a lots of thing like peace, freedom, love ....
Benoit.P (21 months ago | reply)
and anyway i'm not the spokerman of the rainbow , this king of even dont have any leader
Noah Stephens (21 months ago | reply)
I feel you, man. I'm all about peace and freedom to (as long as your freedom does not hurt anyone else).
And I agree that the way the modern world is going is unsustainable. But I don't think the answer is to revert to living the way people did in pre-historic times.
If everyone on earth just committed to having only 1 child, and riding a bike to work instead of driving, we could probably save the earth without having to move to the forest. Best of all, we could still have things like 5D MKIIs and Flickr!

Lovely shot!
You brought up the colors so good in this shot.
Really cool stuff.
Gin Gery (21 months ago | reply)
Sorry if i intervene in your discussion..
But what's the point in judging these people..
Yes, the way they live is romantic. why not? why is this bad?
they have their values and their way to realize them. they are not bothering anyone.. If you just don't like this way, just don't do it.
They don't HAVE to be in this community, it's their free will, they enjoy this and respect it...
Noah Stephens (21 months ago | reply)
"Romantic" is a euphemism for impractical naivete. If we are truly interested in making the world a better place, we should do so by pursuing ways of life that are actually sustainable (like I said, the entire world living in the woods is no more sustainable in the long term than every person living in a huge mansion).
So, their naivete is harmful insofar as it distracts them - and people who think like them - from meaningful, practical, well-reasoned ways to pursue sustainability.
As an aside, I went on netflix right after I posted on this photo, and this was the next episode of Star Trak in my queue:

I found that kinda ironic. :)
