This photo sparked this whole set into being, this one is completely candid and a pure chance shot. The others in the set are a mix of semi candid and observed work.

I really like what you are doing here with these images. Pretty cool. My only thought with this one, is that it looks like it could, depending on the outcome, be in the JackAss movie or on America's Funniest Home videos, although I doubt the miss would be too funny!

Ben Anderson (#BennehBoy)  Pro User  says:

Hey Mona,

I suppose this one is quite different to the others, and that's probably because it was taken purely by chance AND because I deliberately kept the framing quite far out in order to show the drop. Thanks for stopping by.

Big Bax, one could easily mistake it for sheer stupidity, but in fact their actions are very well considered, these guys go to great lengths to ensure they only try jumps that they know they can make - they spend a lot of time practicing on the ground (jumping between low walls for example), and in gyms using padded equipment. I know because I spoke to these guys after the fact.

It is quite amazing to see without any foreknowledge of their sport though (and even with some). Thanks for taking the time to comment - it's very much appreciated.

Tex Flix, I've got 3 little ones myself and know exactly where you're coming from. Looking back on my youth I know I did some pretty stupid things (far more stupid than this), including train surfing. I hope to god my kids have more brains and less peer pressure susceptibility than me. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Nicely done. I definatly think the black and white shot has more oomph than the color one. Now, here's to hoping you don't hear about this little tyke on the evening news saying he has fallen to his death.

Ben Anderson (#BennehBoy)  Pro User  says:

I certainly hope I won't hear anything like that Bucket2005 - if you read up a little bit you'll see that although they do have a dangerous hobby, they do take every opportunity to minimise its risk.

Thanks for taking the time to write down your thoughts.

Amazing picture of me!
The fact it was a chance shot just makes it more immense.
@ people believing I'm crazy/stupid/going to die early:
I have been training for almost 2 years now and would never attempt any sort of jump that could cause seriouse injury or worse if I wasn't 100% about making the other side.
That jump was all about getting over the fear of the height, it is 10ft wide and the rail which I must clear is below the point of take off, on the ground this is a jump I can do 100 times over, without fail, (the jump is on the latest of our videos on our site, www.frpk.co.uk and the video shows I clear the rail by a good 2 feet, more than enough room for error) but the 25-30ft drop proves to be quite a mental boundary to overcome and is the reason I did the jump.
Parkour isn't about the adrenaline rush, it is not about doing crazy jumps. It is about breaking free from the restraints we have all been brought up to follow, you walk along a path, we create our own!

Steiner was right - A sublime shot.

I do a lot of rock climbing, which some people see as risky. It's a sport where certain calculated fall risks are taken all the time.

Parkour is a sport where calculated fall risks are combined with high speed running. I couldn't do it, but I admire those who are comfortable enough with their abilities to go for it.

Censored by the BBC?

It seems that the BBC have decided that my photo cannot be showed on their website as part of their coverage of the Tate How We Are Now winning photos:

www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/galleries/1938/

I'm seeking some clarification as to why my photo (and 2 others) has been omitted - hopefully their decision can be reversed. Hopefully I'm barking up the wrong tree and it's an overisght/technicality, in which case I will apologise for my petulance :)

Incidentally the other photos that were omitted are by Stephen Murphy and Kate Smith - both rather innocuous (but good).

There are those that say parkour / free-running is like being in a real-life video-game; this has got the left-to-right feel of a classic 'platformer' (I have to confess I haven't played a video game for about 15 years!). Top-notch! Incidentally, my comment about the final HWAN selection being 'bland' was referring to things like "the caravans" - certainly not this :-).

I've honestly no idea, this is still my hobby, I don't make a living from photography. For anyone who wants to go down that route, college and Uni can only be a good thing - the key is to be passionate about your subject, if you have that then eveything else will follow.

I'm glad you like the photo - truly.

Good luck.
