Howl's Moving Castle papercraft
I've spent 72 hours over the last three weeks building this papercraft of Howl's Moving Castle.
Watch a time lapse here
As I've mentioned in many other places, I no longer have the pdf. You might find a link to it in the comments on this page, but I cannot guarantee the link will work.

Holy. Crap.
That is awesome! Watched the video, too - and I applaud your patience. Is this made from the book version or the print-it-yourself download? I've seen a couple of the printed ones and this just has really nice depth to it compared to those. It seriously looks sculpted, or assembled out of ... metal scraps and whatnot. Very nice job!

Awesome! I loved that movie and this is terrific. It only took 72 hours???

Seen in your Howl's Moving Castle set. (?)

thatgemgirl - Thanks! This is the book version, but printed from a PDF file I downloaded. There were some parts that didn't glue together very well, but that's okay. On the whole, it was an enjoyable experience, as I watched about 10 of my more favorite movies as I worked.
kokjebalder - Thanks for the comments and faves!
inherdarkroom - Yeah, it ended up being about 72 hours, give or take a few. Some days it felt like it took a lot longer. All the little pieces really made it more complicated.

I love this! It is remarkable. Not only did you make a totally amazing sculpture, but your time lapse video adds so much to the finished piece. I love how your kitty visited sometimes. Oh, and you have lots of really cool shirts. Great work!
Ben.Millett (59 months ago | reply)
Zormasa - Thanks for the comment. I like my shirts, too.

that is the most amazing paper sculpture i have ever seen! great job! enjoyed the vid. i don't think i could have made it all the way through making it. what a daunting task.... but worth it in the end. makes my little cubecat (next photo over) look like a speck of dust. what's supporting it? certainly not those spindally legs...
Ben.Millett (59 months ago | reply)
goldenrusset - there are four "supports" underneath the bottom. The back two supports weren't very supportive and made the castle look like it was sitting down (like a cat or dog). Once the glue dried on them, they were a little more help, but the bird legs did actually help support the back end.

its amazing!! great work.
where did you get this version? i only found the simpler epson version online.
Ben.Millett (58 months ago | reply)
a.n.a. - I did some serious searching of the Internets to get this version. Studio Ghibli published a book that you could cut apart to make this. Someone scanned the book and made it available. I managed to find that file and printed it out.

I know about the book, but its sold out everywhere :(
thanks anyway

yukidomari (53 months ago | reply)
Hi! I was just wondering - in one of your comments you mentioned that some of the parts didn't glue together very well. Is this because the fit is off? I've done a number of paper craft including the "flying" version of howl's castle as well as the dragon from ghibli's gedou senki film, but on attempting this one (from the pdf) I had a very difficult time getting some of the pieces to fit. For example, even the main body seemed like some adjacent lengths were longer than the other (but were supposed to fit together). I checked to see my print calibration and it seems that this is something that is on the scan, and not an error on my part. Did this happen to you as well?
Ben.Millett (53 months ago | reply)
yukidomari The parts that didn't glue together well were scanned & printed right. It was mostly a matter of my not having enough patience to glue some of the parts together correctly.
yukidomari (53 months ago | reply)
hm.. really? maybe you have a better version of the pdf (or a different version, for that matter..) than me. Mind if you link me? or if you know of any place to just buy the book.. I've searched both ebay, yahoo! japan auctions, and amazon japan with no success.
kucingkularilaju (53 months ago | reply)
Goshh!! this awesome! I'm currently building the flying model though.. i think it is simpler than the walking one, but i would like to try it someday... where can i find it?
Ben.Millett (53 months ago | reply)
kucingkularilaju Yes, I think it is simpler. Smaller, at any rate. Send me an email and I'll send a link.

great work)))so excellent)
monyca26 (52 months ago | reply)
Great work!! Do you know there is an author's site (only in japanese) and there we get the process of making the 3D howl's castle model, (and also some correction)→http://ghostman.zombie.jp/gallery .html
as i am a japanese, if you want to get what he said, ask me!
Then, I finally find the pdf data and I'm ready to print it, but I'm wondering which paper to choose...(thickness) would you tell me which thickness of paper did you use? And if there are wrong pdf data like yukidomari saying, please tell me the proper link to get the pdf. Thank you!
Ben.Millett (52 months ago | reply)
monyca26 I've got a description of sorts of paper here. I think 24 or 32 lb paper would be good. Yukidomari said that the file I had was the same.
monyca26 (52 months ago | reply)
Thanks! I'll try it :)
