5 of 5: Storyville superimposed on the Iberville Housing Project. by Ledbetter, Architect.
Current photo (4) with Storyville map (3) outlined in red.
___________________________________________

In 1987 I left New Orleans and my teaching in the architecture school at Tulane University. Around that time I was falling into an obsession with Storyville, New Orleans's infamous red light district, and one of my regrets in leaving when I did was that the next design studio I had planned to teach was to have addressed my interests in the site's history and the implications that history might have for its current uses. I had planned to call the studio THE HOUSING PROJECT OF THE RISING SUN.

I have revisited these interests in occasional research over the last twenty years. But over the last two and a half, as the triple whammies of Katrina, HUD's entanglements with voracious developers, and intractable racism have threatened anew the Iberville Housing Project, the sadness, mysteries and pathos of Iberville's history have brought me to my obsessions with a re-found urgency.

I plan to post prospectuses for a work I am devising for Iberville, as well as a revision to that interrupted Tulane studio, in these pages soon. Meanwhile, any information, contemporary or historical; factual, anecdotal or otherwise, that anyone has regarding the area outlined in the image above would be most welcomed.

I would also appreciate any of you directing other flickr users to me who you think may have information or interest in these issues.

Ben, I'd love to help, but I cannot repost this photograph. I'd put it on Think New Orleans and link to this forum, but the licensing of the photo is not clear.

Can you make it available under the Creative Commons?

Per alangutierrez's request, I have made this photo CC. Though I must admit I am not so sure what all that means. In any event, this photo is a capture from Google Earth; all GE photos are in the public domain. The superimposed drawing on the photo is my own. Almost all images in my site are either my photos or my drawings. When not, I will try to either make their origin obvious (as in the period photos above, which I obviously did not take), or note their source.

Anthony! Thank you for the references via notes. Just what I want. I'd love for the entire map to be covered with such, if others have photos in this area.

That's an extraordinary juxtaposition! It's almost completely replaced the original buildings that so completely engaged my imagination in Bellocq's photographs. I was so close in my short trip there... but never even knew....

Have to say that I was repeatedly warned about going into the area behind the cemetery by myself (actually I was repeatedly warned by white people about going anywhere except the French Quarter and the like by myself -- but whenever I did people were nothing except charming -- often a little askance to begin with, but inevitably incredibly forthcoming once we started talking.)
