Date: 1977
Place: North America: U.s.; Lisle, IL; Building or Local Location
Type: 8x10 Photograph
Description: In Fall 2011 Ben U celebrated the grand reopening of its newly remodeled Rice Center. The Center originally opened as the Physical Education Learning Center in 1976 at a dedication attended by then Congressman John Erlenborn. It became the Rice Center in 1977 after receiving a bequeathment from Ada Rice. Ada, along with her husband Dan, owned Danada Farms in Wheaton, which produced the 1965 Kentucky Derby winner Lucky Debonair. Along with the bequeathment, Rice also left Illinois Benedictine College (as Ben U was known then) 140 racing trophies, including the Kentucky Derby cup.
This photo shows the center’s first dedication as the Rice Center. Presiding over the event is Bishop Daniel Kucera, OSB, a college alumnus, former president of the college, and former abbot of St. Procopius Abbey. Seated to his right (facing the photo) are Abbott Thomas Havlik, OSB, and college president Richard Becker. Photos of Dan and Ada behind the podium kept their memories present during the event.
