An eye on violence...![]() “Poorer children and youth are the major victims of violence”, say the experts. In a recent article in São Paulo’s major newspaper, the Folha de São Paulo, Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, independent expert to the UN General Secretary and Marcelo Daher, UN Human Rights High Commission specialist in Geneva, stated that the majority of violent crimes involving children and youth occur in low-income classes living in underprivileged communities: “It is in the ghettos (favelas - shanties) and the suburban peripheries of the big cities (like our Eldorado), where the majority of Afro-descendents and the poorer population are segregated, that the prevailing high statistics regarding homicide involving young people are found all over the world. Almost always these violent acts are answered with silence and indifference.” According to the experts, “reducing the age of penal responsibility and prolonging the periods of incarceration of children and youth, will only contribute towards worsening the cycle of proven incompetence in protecting the population.” Comments~btezra~ [deleted] says:powerful frame © the big pictures
