Life After Streets - 01

Life After Streets - 01 by carf.
Life after the streets has many unexpected surprises, like becoming a young mother at the age of 16. More than 30.000 girls under the age of 14 give birth each year in Brazil, many of these newborn will become tomorrows children at risk in a country still not prepared to care or cater for it’s next generation. For former street girl Sandra, becoming a mother to Patrick and a wife to his father Marcio, symbolizes new responsibilities and a clearer vision of the future that lies ahead of her. I truly admire her courage.

What does Brazil's government do to discourage young women from having children ... if the nation is not prepared to to care or cater as you put it....?

Sorry to say this problem is deep going in our society, where fundamental and qualititive education and health is highly lacking in the public system. It is also a cultural problem.
Today there are hundreds of programmes directed at the problem, mostly NGO initiatives, but it is far from what is needed. The problem has to be approached at the roots as it is a question of re-education, starting from the very young in society.

As long as Brazil persists to leave quality education and health in the hands of private commerce instead of being a government responsibility, those without money or means will continue to be ignorant of the consequences of their own actions. As it is so common for young girls to reproduce in Brazilian society, it is not looked upon as a "problem" by those affected by it. The real problem though, is that this affects our entire society and continues reproducing the cycle of poverty.

Brazil is caught up in an "inequality trap" as was so fittingly said in the World Bank's fresh report on Equaty and Development. Not surprising that it ranks fifth in line of the most inequal societies on our planet today!

Wow, the story behind these photos is unbelievable. You followed this girl that long? Or at least caught back up with her after this period. Amazing. I hope she does right by her baby.

Thanks for sharing your innovative photo! Please consider posting it in our pool.
